Artificial intelligence (AI) is like a brain for machines, helping them do things without being told exactly what to do. There are two kinds of AI: weak AI and strong AI. Weak AI is used for specific tasks, like telling a robot to play music. Strong AI, or artificial general intelligence (AGI), can understand and learn things like humans do.
Weak AI is seen in virtual personal assistants (VPAs) like Siri and Alexa
They can do different tasks like setting reminders and answering questions, but they only work within certain limits. For instance, when you tell Siri to set an alarm, it follows a set way to do it and doesn’t really understand.
Recommendation systems, like when Netflix suggests movies, are also a form of weak AI. They guess what you might like based on what you’ve watched before, but they don’t really understand why you like things.
Chatbots and customer service bots use weak AI to talk to you and help you. They can only follow the instructions they’ve been given and aren’t great at understanding what you really mean.
Image and speech recognition technologies, which help in things like tagging friends in photos, are also a form of weak AI. They can understand pictures and words, but only up to a point.
Autonomous vehicles, like self-driving cars, rely on weak AI to move around
They use AI to make decisions, but still need humans to help in tricky situations.
In video games, AI makes characters challenging to play against, but it’s still weak AI. It can’t learn new things or come up with new ideas on its own.
Weak AI does a lot of cool stuff for us, but it has limits. It can’t really learn on its own or understand things in the same way people do. Making really smart AI, like human-like AI, is a tough challenge that we’re still working on. It’s important to know what weak AI can and can’t do as we keep developing it.
